Production Type announced today that it has acquired the exclusive rights to the type design legacy of legendary poster artist and graphic designer, Cassandre. The acquisition includes the rights to Cassandre’s most famous typeface, “Peignot,” as well as his other typefaces and typography work.
Adolphe Mouron Cassandre is a prominent graphic designer known for his unique approach to typography and the experimental use of legibility in his work. A.M. Cassandre spent his career renewing himself ceaselessly and believing that each design act was a new battle to win. Born with two innate tendencies, a need for formal perfection and a burning thirst for lyrical expression, he left a lasting legacy in the history of typographic design.
One of the most notable typefaces designed by Cassandre is the famous Peignot. With Peignot, Cassandre aimed to reform writing and create a typeface representative of his century by returning to the sources of the Roman alphabet. He believed that the use of capitals in printing could be revolutionized and attempted to create a radical typeface based solely on the capital letter. Peignot was widely launched and used for the International Exhibition of 1937, and soon adopted by Yves Saint Laurent and Harper’s Bazaar.
The roster also includes other significant typefaces such as “Bifur,” a multi-layer chromatic typeface, “Graphika 81,” a typewriter face, and “Acier,” a layered sans-serif typeface in the Art Deco style. An especially exciting addition to Production Type's library of typefaces is the hidden gem “Cassandre,” named after the designer himself. The typeface is a lively, organic retake of the designer’s epigraphic research.
The estate of A.M. Cassandre expressed their enthusiasm for the partnership, stating they are “thrilled to be working with Production Type to ensure that A.M. Cassandre’s legacy is preserved and celebrated for years to come.”
