Proto Grotesk, Mono, Slab and Slab Condensed are Jean-Baptiste Levée’s exploration into early “grots” and “egyptians”, the rough-and-ready jobbing typefaces of the 19th century. These four-weight families translate antique styles into a useful contemporary vernacular without abandoning their eccentricities. Proto Grotesk was released in 2014 with a single weight. It was extended to two weights in 2015, and then four to match the Proto Slab. Later in 2019 the family was expanded with Mono and Slab Condensed styles. With comparable weights and proportions, the five families are made to be used together.
