New fonts from Production Type: Dr

Dr is a curious kind of geometric sans serif. With only minimal optical corrections of the letterforms, widely differing proportions, and some preposterous looking design details (like the tail of the Q, the J, the W, or r) a lot in this typeface seems weirdly off.

New fonts from Production Type: Dr
The story of Dr started when Bureau Brut developed a typeface as part of the design for a medical company specialized in orthopedic prosthetics and implants for hands and wrists. It explains why Dr is a curious kind of geometric sans serif: as if artificial body parts had been affixed where the “normal” ones have gone missing.

Usually, the life of such a bespoke typeface is intrinsically tied to that of the commissionner. However, the newly formed Bureau Brut, the graphic design studio co-founded by Yoann Minet with Julia Joffre and Camille Prandi, was able to discuss with Production Type about a commercial release. Yoann Minet and Production Type have a long-standing relation which started in 2013, even before Production Type officially existed. So it felt like Dr was at ease alongside Stratos, the previous typeface released by Minet under his own name. Dr extends some of the design statements already initiated in Stratos, but it also adds an unexpected shapes vocabulary. Dr perfectly embodies what Production Type is looking for: useful type with an edge.

This time, the whole team at Bureau Brut is credited for the design, and Production Type is thrilled to welcome Dr in its catalogue.
